Breast Cancer Surgery Options

Most women undergoing breast cancer treatment will have some form of surgery, as it is the most effective method for removing the cancer. Surgery is often combined with other treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, to enhance overall effectiveness. The type of surgery may vary in intensity, ranging from more aggressive to less invasive procedures.

Mastectomy:

A mastectomy is the most aggressive form of breast cancer surgery, removing all of one or both breasts. Some mastectomies also remove other affected areas like chest muscles, different structures of the chest wall, or lymph nodes under your arms. Removing the whole breast allows for minimal chance of recurrence and removal of all of the cancer that is in the breast.

Mastectomy with Reconstruction:

A mastectomy with reconstruction is similar to a typical mastectomy. While doctors will still remove all of the breast and its tissue, they will also reconstruct the breast in a team with a plastic surgeon. This can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or anytime after. A plastic surgeon will use an implant to replace the breast that was removed.

Lumpectomy/Partial Mastectomy:

A lumpectomy, which can also be referred to as a partial mastectomy, is when a doctor removes an individual tumor from your breast. This is often used in the early stages of breast cancer and allows your breast to look like it did before surgery.
